Wolf shifters and doctors Noah Taylor and Mackenzie “Mack” Carter enter a mutually beneficial arrangement where they pretend to be mated at work. Having to spend time together to keep up their lie, Noah and Mack eventually add a friends-with-benefits addendum to their arrangement and inevitability find it challenging to separate real from “fake” feelings. We chat with Lana Ferguson about paranormal romances, future releases, and all things The Fake Mate!
Q: How did you prepare to write this wolf shifter doctor romance? Did you have to do any type of shifter or medical research? A: "I have an RN friend that works in the ER who really did the most and came through with helping me through a lot of the hospital setup and medical talk. Fun fact: she had no idea what a shifter romance was before agreeing to help me and still blames me for the questionable facebook suggestions she gets to this day. I was already pretty obsessed with shifter/omegaverse dynamics so I really just played with what I already knew! One of my favorite parts about this genre as that it’s so flexible; you can really make it your own and bend it to meet your needs, since sadly, knotting does not exist for us in real life." Gigi Graham enlists the help of fellow Briar University hockey player Ryder to improve her skills behind the net in exchange for helping Ryder secure a coveted summer coaching job with her dad, famous hockey player Garrett Graham. When their chemistry becomes too hot to ignore, Gigi and Ryder begin a secret relationship to avoid the wrath of Gigi’s ex, who is also Ryder’s teammate. We chat with Elle Kennedy about inspiration, future releases, and all things The Graham Effect!
Q: Are you able to tease any details about the next book in the Campus Diaries series (or any of your upcoming releases)? A: "I am currently working on the next book in the series—THE DIXON RULE. It follows Ryder’s teammate Shane Lindley, and Gigi’s best friend Diana Dixon, who can’t stand him J I also have a February 2024 release I’m super excited about. It’s called GIRL ABROAD and it’s about a college sophomore who spends a year studying in London. She shows up expecting female roommates, only to wind up living with three guys. It’s such a fun story with lots of little twists and turns (and romance, of course!)" (Elle Kennedy 2023) Continue reading this article on "The Nerd Daily's" website by clicking HERE!
When Kate Wilmot’s childhood neighbour Christopher learns the real reason behind Kate’s hostile behaviour towards him, he vows to make peace. Things get interesting when one of Christopher’s attempts to smooth things over with Kate ends in a passionate kiss between these once enemies. We chat with Chloe Liese about inspiration, future releases, and all things Better Hate than Never!
Q: What can readers expect from Better Hate than Never? A: "Readers can expect a story that leans into the enemies of the “enemies to lovers” trope while also revelling in the beauty of building trust, pursuing healing, & experiencing deep intimacy as they become lovers. These two lead characters have truly electric, intense chemistry, and I hope to give readers a satisfying experience of watching that intensity morph from enmity to achingly real, tender love. This book reimagines Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew through a modern, feminist lens that celebrates the kind of woman Shakespeare’s time called (and too often, modern culture still does) a “shrew”—a woman who uses her voice and speaks up and isn’t afraid to generate conflict in challenging the status quo. It has lots of nods to the classic rom-com 10 Things I Hate About You, which is another The Taming of the Shrew retelling and one of my favorite films ever, and I’d say it also gives fans of Anne of Green Gables a vibe reminiscent of Anne and Gilbert’s sparring, evolving, complex relationship. It’s set in the same world as Two Wrongs Make a Right, the first book in the Wilmot Sisters series, so readers can expect to see lots of Jamie and Bea cameos, and they’ll get to spend more time with the ensemble cast of their friends, family, and chosen family, who I had a blast revisiting and bringing along for Kate and Christopher’s story. Finally, my readers can expect what I’m always prioritizing in my work—representation of real human experiences like chronic illness and neurodivergence; an exploration of the very real fears we often carry that people will misunderstood or judge or not love us for those parts of ourselves and a celebration of love that works hard to understand our needs, make safe space for us, and affirm our desirability, our lovableness not in spite of those human realities but because they are part of who we are and make us no less worthy of joy, intimacy, and happily ever after." Ryker Matthews is a retired Marine turned mechanic who struggles with PTSD and phantom limb pain after his amputation. Bryce Weatherford is a chef at PattyCakes who is struggling to adjust to her new role as a guardian of her 3 young nieces. After a mishap in the grocery store, Bryce and Ryker develop a quick friendship and attraction towards each other. We chat with Dylan Newton about inspiration, book recommendations, and all things Change of Plans!
Q: Change of Plans is full of funny and heartwarming moments. Did you have a favourite scene to write and if so, why? A: "Aw, thanks for that lovely compliment! I loved writing the cardboard pirate ship reveal scene so much because it showcases Ryker’s love language—acts of service. Ryker best communicates his feelings through physically doing things for those he cares for—it’s one of the many things I find swoony about Ryker!" Shy bookworm Lily spends months emailing back and forth with her favorite fantasy author, N. R. Strickland, only to be inexplicably ghosted. Sometime later, Lily desperately needs a date to her sister’s wedding and enlists the help of her handsome neighbour Nick…who secretly writes under the pen name N. R. Strickland. We chat with Kristina Forest about inspiration, book recommendations, and all things The Neighbor Favor.
Q: What sets The Neighbor Favor apart from other contemporary romances? A: "What I like most about The Neighbor Favor is that I think it fits well into the contemporary romance canon. I didn’t set out to do anything revolutionary. I just wanted to tell a good, romantic story with Black characters, and I hope that’s what I achieved! As a romance reader, I like to go into a book knowing that it’s going to deliver on certain tropes and storylines, and hopefully readers feel satisfied with the story that I wrote. That in itself makes any book feel special." (Kristina Forest 2023) Continue reading this article on "The Nerd Daily's" website by clicking HERE!
Even though Jamie and Bea are total opposites, their friends trick them into going on a date with each other. Once Jamie and Bea realize that they’ve been duped, they hatch a plan to get revenge on their meddling friends: they’ll fake date, pretend to fall in love, and then have a horrible break-up. While pretending to be madly in love, Jamie and Bea start to wonder if their friends’ matchmaking wasn’t so off-base after all. We chat with Chloe Liese about inspiration, upcoming releases, and all things Two Wrongs Make a Right!
Q: What inspired you to write a retelling of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing? A: "I’m a Shakespeare lover who grew up enjoying reading his plays, seeing them performed, and watching adaptations for film and TV. While I’ve read some fabulous Austen retellings from the romance genre, I haven’t bumped into a ton of Shakespeare retellings, so I’d been thinking about writing one. During the early months of pandemic, I was comfort rewatching Much Ado About Nothing adapted for film, starring Emma Thompson and Kenneth Branagh, and I had this epiphany while watching it: in the play, Benedick and Beatrice don’t find out until the end of the story that they were tricked into realizing their feelings for each other under false pretenses, and they’re too happily in love to be mad about it, but, what if they’d found out sooner in the story? They would have been livid! I started thinking about how the concept of a group scheme to matchmake Benedick and Beatrice might need to be adjusted to translate into a modern setting, how I could update it to feel relatable and make sure it translated well, and I realized it would be perfect if I gave Benedick and Beatrice the chance to push back against being manipulated. If they realized that they’d been tricked into dating earlier on, when they were both still so determined to see the worst in each other, they’d have this delicious friction still but also a common goal of getting back at the people who duped them. I loved the idea of two people who had decided they were incompatible and had written each other off, being united by a revenge plot, determined to prove their friends wrong about their romantic compatibility, only to realize maybe their friends weren’t so wrong after all." After graduating high school, Lenore is ready to embark on a European cruise with her family where, influenced by her best friend Tessa, she seeks a European summer romance. But the cute boy that Lenore has her eye on (Alex) ends up being a total jerk. Even worse, Alex and his family have been assigned to Lenore’s dining table and their families have decided that they will be doing all the excursions together. Yet, the more time Lenore is forced to spend with Alex, the more she starts to open-up and show her true self - maybe Lenore will get a European summer love story after all. We chat with Elise Bryant about European destinations, inspiration, possible sequels, and all things One True Loves. Q: Is there any chance that you’ll write a Happily Ever Afters book 3 (perhaps featuring Lenore and Tessa’s best friend Theo or one of Lenore’s siblings)? A: "I don’t have any plans to follow those characters as of now, but I never know what inspiration will strike in the future! My next book will be released early next year, though, and takes place in the same world as Happily Ever Afters and One True Loves. It’s called Reggie and Delilah’s Year of Falling, and it follows two Black teens, a Dungeons & Dragons dungeon master and the lead singer of a punk bad, as they fall in love through chance meetings and missed connections on holidays over the course of one year. One of the main characters is actually in One True Loves, and Lenore makes an appearance in this book, too!" Q: What is the main message that you want readers to take away from As If On Cue? A: "As If on Cue is a celebration of the arts and an ode to the impact art can have during these formative periods of our lives. I hope readers, especially teen readers, take away that whatever their relationship to art is, it is valid. There are so many different and fulfilling ways that art (or any activity that brings you joy!) can be a part of your life. Just let your passions lead you forward. And if you stumble along the way? That’s just part of the process." This article was written for "The Nerd Daily". I am so thankful to have had the opportunity to chat with author Dylan Newton about her new novel How Sweet It Is. During a lull in her schedule, wedding event planner Kate Sweet agrees to plan a book launch for horror writer Drake Matthews to help her publicist best friend. Things get off to a rocky start when Kate accidentally maims her new client and Drake vetoes every one of Kate’s “Spooktacular” book launch ideas. But the great Drake Matthews has writer’s block and the only thing he can seem to write is historical romance. So, when Drake realizes that Kate may just be the inspiration he needs for his historical romance love interest, the pair form an unexpected truce, and their professional relationship quickly turns into something more. We chat with author Dylan Newton about overcoming challenges, inspiration, and, of course, How Sweet It Is. Q: Hi Dylan – I really enjoyed reading your latest novel, How Sweet It Is! Can you tell us a little bit about yourself? A: "Hi! First, thank you for having me on The Nerd Daily—I’m excited to be here! I grew up in rural Western New York where I hit my nerd stride early, as the library was my favorite hangout. I was an English major in college, yet my first career was in…banking call centers! The most writing I did was in memos and on Excel project plans. After a decade, I switched careers and began to write full-time. I married my high school sweetheart, and we split time in Florida and New York with our two much cooler daughters, two spoiled cats and a tone-deaf cockatiel. I love reading (shocker!) and fixing up our project home: a Victorian built in 1900 that stole our hearts and may or may not be the inspiration for the Victorian home in my debut rom-com."
