In honour of back to school, I have made a list of my top 10 favourite children’s literature books (in no particular order)… 1. Anything Dr. Seuss Need I say more? Some of my favourites are “The Cat in the Hat”, “The Lorax”, “Green Eggs and Ham”, and “The Grinch”. 2. The “Miss Nelson” Collection by Harry Allard Miss Nelson is a kind teacher but her students are always misbehaving…that is, until a mean teacher named Miss Viola Swamp becomes their substitute teacher! I love these books because they are funny and keep you guessing. They also teach an important lesson about respecting your teachers. 3. The “Pigeon” Book Series by Mo Willems I love these books because they are so funny! They are about a stubborn but loveable talking pigeon. Photo credit: "Mum Central" 4. Anything “Disney” Again, need I say more? Some of my personal favourites are “Finding Nemo”, “The Lion King”, and the “Disney Princess” books. 5. “A Bad Case of Stripes” by David Shannon Camilla loves lima beans but refuses to eat them because her friends don’t like them…that is, until she wakes up with colourful stripes all over herself! I enjoy this book because it is funny and it highlights the importance of not worrying about what other people think of you. I would also recommend the sequels: “Knuffle Bunny Too” and “Knuffle Bunny Free”. Photo credit: "Amazon" 7. “Red is Best” by Kathy Stinson This book was one of my favourites as a kid. It’s about a young girl who just loves the colour red; because red is best. 8. “Stephanie’s Ponytail” by Robert Munsch Stephanie loves her ponytail but when everyone in her class decides to copy her hairstyles, Stephanie gets frustrated and decides to play a trick on her class. I love this book because it shows how important it is to be yourself (and not copy anyone else). It is about Jule Ann and her battle against a mud puddle who keeps on coming into her backyard and getting her clean clothes all muddy. 10. “Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?” by Bill Martin Jr. I read this book so many times when I was little. I think this book is a classic; it is simple yet engaging. I also love the bright coloured illustrations. Wishing everyone good luck as you (or your kids) go back to school!
