“Somerset Lake is the perfect place for Trisha Langly and her son to start over. As the new manager for the Somerset Cottages, Trisha is instantly charmed by the property’s elderly residents and her firecracker of a new boss, Vi Fletcher. But Trisha is less enchanted by Vi’s protective grandson Jake. No matter how tempting she finds the handsome lawyer, Trisha knows that if Jake discovers the truth about her past, she’ll lose the new life she’s worked so hard to build. Jake Fletcher left Somerset Lake after a tragic loss, but he’s returning for the summer to care for his beloved grandmother, hoping Vi will sell the run-down cottages and finally slow down. There’s just one problem: Trisha, Vi’s new employee. She’s smart, beautiful, and kind, but Jake’s job is to protect his grandmother’s interests, and his gut is telling him Trisha’s hiding something that could jeopardize Vi’s future. However, as they spend summer days renovating the property and bonding over their love for the town, Jake realizes that Trisha is a risk worth taking—if only she can trust him with her secrets...and her heart.” (Description of The Summer Cottage by Annie Rains taken from Hachette Book Group’s website). The Summer Cottage by Annie Rains is a smalltown romance perfect for fans of Robyn Carr, Karen Kingsbury, Jill Shalvis, and RaeAnne Thayne. I would also highly recommend The Summer Cottage to fans of Hallmark romance movies. The Summer Cottage deals with themes such as parenting, family and friendship, divorce and heartbreak, love and loss, desire to escape, past versus present, crime, truth and lies, and change versus tradition. Some potential trigger warnings include strokes, anaphylaxis allergies, bullying, embezzlement, and incarceration. The moral of this story is that home is where the heart is. Firstly, I liked how The Summer Cottage was a short, sweet, and quick read (it was just under 300 pages). Being a huge fan of the Virgin River books and film series, I enjoyed how Trisha’s character and storyline in The Summer Cottage was reminiscent of Paige’s character and storyline in Virgin River; they’re both single mothers of a young son who move to a smalltown while attempting to escape their pasts. In addition to loving the beautiful lakeside cottage setting, I also enjoyed the inclusion of the enemies to lovers and forced proximity tropes. Lastly, I appreciated that a preview of book 2 in the Somerset Lake series (The Christmas Village) and a bonus story from Annie Rains’ Sweetwater Springs series (Kiss Me in Sweetwater Springs) was included at the end of (this edition of) The Summer Cottage.
Overall, The Summer Cottage was a short and sweet summer read that I would highly recommend to fans of Hallmark movies and the Virgin River series. If you enjoyed The Summer Cottage by Annie Rains, make sure you check out book 3 in the Somerset Lake series, The True Love Bookshop, when it comes out on July 5th!
