The story begins when two high school students, Violet Markey and Theodore Finch, meet at the top of their school's bell tower. Finch is dealing with an undiagnosed mental health disorder and Violet is struggling with the recent death of her older sister. The two become extremely close after they partner up for a school project, which involves "wandering" to unusual sites throughout Indiana. But as Violet starts to heal, Finch's mental health starts to spiral downwards. Why I Chose this Book...

When Alina Starkov and her best friend Mal are attacked by volcra (monsters) while they are traveling through the Fold (a stretch of land that is covered in never-ending darkness), Alina discovers that she is a Grisha (someone who has the ability to manipulate matter e.g. control the wind or the tides, slow or stop a heart, alter physical appearance, call fire, etc.). The rest of the story revolves around what happens after Alina is taken to the little palace by the Darkling (a powerful Grisha who is able to call darkness) in an attempt to help Alina harness her unique ability and hopefully destroy the Fold.
Have an amazing New Year!"Let It Snow" consists of 3 interconnected Christmas-themed short stories. In "The Jubilee Express" by Maureen Johnson, some unexpected events force Jubilee to befriend a handsome stranger on Christmas Eve. In "A Cheertastic Christmas Miracle" by John Green, best friends "the Duke" and Tobin ponder whether or not they should become more than friends while they race to the Waffle House in the middle of a snow storm. Lastly, in "The Patron Saint of Pigs" by Lauren Myracle, a love sick barista named Addie goes on a snowy mission to obtain a tea cup pig for her best friend Tegan. Why I Chose This Book... -It is a perfect read for the holiday season! -It was a quick and easy read...each short story was only about 100 pages -I liked how all 3 of the short stories were connected in some way -John Green is one of my favourite authors :) -If you like this book, "Let It Snow" was just made into a Netflix movie (I haven't seen it yet but I am planning on watching it soon) Hope you have a Happy Holidays!
In "Red Queen" by Victoria Aveyard, the world is divided by the colour of your blood - those with silver blood have special abilities and rule over those with red blood whereas those with red blood have no special abilities and serve those who have silver blood. Mare Barrow has red blood but, when she is unexpectedly thrown into the world of the silver royals and the scarlet guard rebellion, she discovers that she is extremely powerful...maybe even more powerful than the silvers. Rise Red as the Dawn Why I choose this book... -It was a great read - it reminded me of some of my other favourite book series including Harry Potter and the Mortal Instruments -Similar to district 12 from the Hunger Games (another one of my favourite books), the Stilts (where Mare and her family live) is also a dystopian society -Mare Barrow is a strong and brave female role model :) -If you liked this book, there are 3 sequels - I am reading the second book (Glass Sword) right now! -This book had a little bit of everything - action, adventure, supernatural, drama, and romance "Looking for Alaska" follows Miles a.k.a. Pudge during his first year at a new school. He quickly becomes friends with his roommate "the Colonel" and falls in love with the beautiful and daring Alaska Young (even though she already has a boyfriend); throughout the book, they get into all sorts of trouble together. I don't want to give too much away but, after a terrible accident, Pudge investigates in order to find out if the accident was truly an accident or if it was done on purpose. Why I chose this book... -The t.v. show that is based on this book (and shares the same name) is set to premiere this month -John Green is one of my favourite authors -It was easy to read and it was very engaging -The book is set up in a unique way: in the beginning, the chapters count down the days until the accident and the rest of the chapters count up the days after the accident Warning: this book looks at some deep topics including suicide and drunk driving Picture Citation: Amazon.ca Have a Happy and Safe Hallowe'en!!! "The Alchemyst" by Michael Scott is the first book in "The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel" series. If you are a "Potterhead", the name Nicholas Flamel might sound familiar to you :) "The Alchemyst" takes place in a world very similar to the one portrayed by J. K. Rowling in her "Harry Potter" books - it is full of magical adventures, mythical creatures, age-old prophecies, and powerful characters. Two teen-aged twins named Sophie and Josh Newman find themselves thrust into a new and magical world when they witness an evil magician named Dee attack the immortal Nicholas Flamel and his wife Perenelle in an attempt to steal the Codex (a book full of magical secrets that the Flamels protect).
Why I chose this book... -"The Alchemyst" is very similar to "Harry Potter" (which I love) -In you enjoy "The Alchemyst", there are 5 sequels: "The Magician", "The Sorceress", "The Necromancer", "The Warlock", and "The Enchantress") -Throughout the series, the characters visit some well-known tourist attractions (including Paris and Alcatraz) and meet some historical figures (such as Joan of Arc and Shakespeare) -Similar to the popular "Fantastic Beasts" movie series, Sophie and Josh Newman encounter exciting mythical creatures and magical beasts on their journeys -In my opinion, this book would be great for a book report/ independent novel study (check with your teacher first) -According to Michael Scott's website, "The Alchemyst" is going to be made into a movie :) "Every Day" by David Levithan follows A; a gender-less soul who wakes up inside of a different body each morning. Every day, A tries to live the life of the person whose body A occupies. A is really good at keeping A's existence a secret...that is, until A wakes up in the body of Justin and A meets Justin's girlfriend: Rhiannon. But, how can A have a relationship with Rhiannon (or anyone for that matter) when A involuntarily inhabits a different body every day? Also, what would happen to A if the secret of A's existence was discovered? Why I choose this book... -I really enjoyed reading this book -"Every Day" is a very unique and interesting read...I have never read anything like it before -This book is a relatively short and easy read - it's a perfect book to read at the beach or by the pool :) -If you enjoy this book, David Levithan has written other books as well; including the sequel to "Every Day" (which is called "Someday") -I haven't seen it yet, but "Every Day" was just made into a movie "After" by Anna Todd focuses on the events that happen after a preppy college freshman named Tessa meets a handsome but complicated bad boy named Hardin Scott.
I chose this book because... - "After" is one of my new favourite books! - I had a hard time putting this book down because there were so many unexpected twists and turns - Even though the book was relatively long, it was an easy read - If you enjoyed "After", there are more books in the series ("After We Collided", "After We Fell", and "After Ever Happy")...I just finished book 2 and cannot wait to start book 3! - You can read the book for free on "Wattpad" - https://www.wattpad.com/story/5095707-after - Lastly, if you enjoyed reading about "Hessa", "After" just got made into a movie...I haven't seen it yet but I am planning on watching it soon Hope you are having a great summer so far :) "The Red Scrolls of Magic" is a part of the "Shadowhunter" book series by Cassandra Clare; it focuses on the events that take place when shadowhunter Alec Lightwood and high warlock Magnus Bane go on vacation together after the Mortal War (in between "City of Glass" and "City of Fallen Angels" in Clare's "The Mortal Instruments" series). I picked this book for June's book club read because...
If you liked this book, Cassandra Clare has written a bunch of other "Shadowhunter" books and short stories including "The Mortal Instruments" series, "The Dark Artifices" series, and the "Infernal Devices" series. For a complete list of Cassandra Clare's "Shadowhunter" books and the chroniolgical reading order for her books, check out her website - http://shadowhunters.com/ If you're interested, there is also a movie ("The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones") and a television series ("Shadowhunters") based off of "The Mortal Instruments" series. Did you know that June is Scoliosis Awareness Month? For those who are interested, here are some good books where the main characters have scoliosis...
